HIGH NOON
Assistant to curator Dr. Sabine Schnakenberg
With works by Nan Goldin, David Armstrong, Mark Morrisroe, Philip-Lorca DiCorcia
The group exhibition highlights New York’s subculture through intense and often strikingly intimate images. Set against the political climate of the Reagan era in the 1980s—characterized by conservative values and neoliberalism—the works of close friends Nan Goldin, David Armstrong, and Mark Morrisroe capture deeply personal moments of love, friendship, and decay within their peer group. Their unmistakable style and autobiographical approach unfold against a backdrop of passion, addiction, and the AIDS crisis.
Philip-Lorca diCorcia, by contrast, constructs staged narratives drawn from everyday scenes in his surroundings. He creates idealized archetypes and critically engages with the notion of the photographic document.
Around 150 works from the F.C. Gundlach Collection are presented in the exhibition, continuing to resonate today—both within the art world and in society’s perception of sexuality, relationships, and identity.
